Hitting a V-Note in NYC

By Leslie · Comments (1) · September 4th, 2012

In a city with a vegan restaurant list growing by the minute, it’s hard to know where to start.  V-Note caught my eye because well, it’s close to where I stay on the Upper East Side and because not only is it a vegan bistro, but also a vegan wine bar :)  The dining room is darling!  No granola decorating here!  The resto is lined with sleek booths and quaint tables.  They also had live music the night I was there which was delightful.

The biggest challenge at V-Note is what to order since everything on the menu looks heavenly!  Since my date was my veggie-loving cousin Emily, we ordered a bunch of options and tried a little of everything.  Joe our waiter helped us navigate to the best options for us.  We started with the roasted pumpkin and sweet potato gnocchi:

Not too heavy, not to light, this gnocchi was delish and would definitely recommend you order!  The sage cashew cream they are sitting on is divine.  Next up we got the Curried Unchicken Salad:

This salad was good for sure, but it probably wouldn’t be the first thing I order again.  I am not the biggest fan of faux meat and while this was a very tasty salad I’ll probably stick to the all veggie ones next time.  But I will say the dressing was fabulous.  For our entrees we ordered the Pistachio and Pepper Dusted Tofu:

Yum!!  This tofu sat on a crepe filled with roasted veggies and that sauce is a lemon truffle emulsion!  Very very tasty!  My cousin particularly loved the sauce and spices in this!  And the Mushroom Lentil Ravioli:

Double yum!!  The perfectly prepared pasta pillows were filled with lentils and smoked eggplant and were in a shitake cream sauce!  Yum! Super rich and decadent.  For dessert we split a cheesecake:

I’m a big fan of cheesecake and this one was good.  I think I actually prefer “raw” cheesecakes to cooked ones, but this one was pretty well done.  Great texture and flavors… next time I’m looking forward to ordering the tiramisu which they were out of this night.

Overall, definitely check out V-Note!  Fabulous place for dinner, dates, and drinks!

It's Not Everyday I'm Trufflin' With Mario Batali

By Leslie · Comments (13) · November 7th, 2011

The other night in New York City I had the enormous pleasure of breaking bread with the mythical Mario Batali, one of the world’s top Italian Chefs and most colorful TV Food Personalities. We had a glorious dinner at the fabled Babbo, a true culinary experience that should be had by all!  I know what you’re thinking: Isn’t he a ‘meat guy?’  Well, yes, but Mario knows how to take care of his veggie dreamgirls.  There were no stereotypical ‘grilled vegetable plates’ on the menu here. Mario shows off his vegetarian creativity with dishes like Roasted Beet Tartare with Chianti Vinegar and Marina di Chioggia Squash with Pomegranates and Shiso to make your senses dance!

But it was the truffles that blew me away on this night. No, not those dreamy chocolate morsels… the other truffle – the fungus. Being smack dab in the middle of Italy’s white truffle season, of course Mario would be featuring a White Truffle Tasting Menu and to my elation, ordering for our table. I have to say, it was one of the highlights of all my culinary adventures!  Mario perfectly pairs the delicate flavors of the truffle with vegetables and meat alike, further benefiting the essence of the meal with exquisitely paired wines.

744px-Truffle_washed_and_cuttedNow, you may be saying, "truffle smuffle… who can afford ugly mushrooms that cost as much as manolos?"  Yes, the prices can reach astronomical heights, but you do have options.  There are a lot of rumors and mysteries surrounding these odd-looking fungi so let's get some facts clear.  Truffles are in the mushroom family. Truffles are found throughout Italy and special "hunting" pigs and dogs are used to find them underground.  And they can also lead to serious Soprano-esque business…  There is an entire black market devoted to peddling the fancy fungi. Meanwhile, the record price paid for a truffle was in 2010 by Macau casino owner Stanley Ho.  He paid $330,000 for a truffle weighing nearly one kilogram.  (p.s. that's just over 2lbs.!)

But have no fear, mortgaging your house is not the only way to enjoy truffles.  Nowadays you can find truffles and truffle essence in a lot of wonderful, locally sourced products.  They can be a little pricey, but remember a little goes a very long way.  Try looking for truffle butter, truffle cheese, truffle salt, and truffle oil.  If you are interested in buying truffles here is a site with options.

So is all the hype worth it?  Oh yeah.  Truffles, aside from offering their unique taste — very earthy and umami if you like — they deliver a luxurious experience. See for yourself with my recipe for Truffle Mac 'n Cheese  and let me know what you think!  And as for Mario, it was a treat to be trufflin’ – unclogged – with the Master of Truffles himself.

Mario-bataliBe sure to catch Mario weekdays on ABC's The Chew.

Eataly, New York City

By Leslie · Comments (6) · October 19th, 2011

Eataly should have it’s own zip code!  A veritable Disneyworld for Italian foodies (and wannabes), Eataly takes up 50,000 square feet of the Gramercy Park neighborhood.  It’s owned and run by Mario Batali and Lidia and Joe Bastianich.  Lidia is considered the Grandmother of Italian cooking in America.  Joe is her winemaking/entrepreneur son and Mario, well, turn on the Food Network and he’s probably on.  Eataly is restaurants, markets, a school, a store, basically everything anyone would ever need to become Italian…  I think Mario might be a little disappointed to not be born Italian… what do you think?

So, if you can maneuver your way through the mass amounts of tourists, there is some pretty cool stuff going on here.  The two restaurants that I ate at were fantastic and the produce I bought and cooked was excellent.

The first restaurant I hit up was La Pizza & La Pasta.  Of course I had to start with a little Italian beer ;)

IMG_7310-webI brought along my friend Laura (an incredible photographer BTW) and we shared a plate of the quadrati ricotta e spinaci (spinach and ricotta ravioli) to start.  They were delightful little pillows of joy in a creamy buttery sauce topped with pistachios.

IMG_7311-webOf course we had to order pizza :)  I ordered the Napoli which is just tomato sauce, oregano, garlic, and basil:

IMG_7318-webMario always makes a good pizza and this one is no exception, but I have to say, his pizzas are best at Pizzeria Mozza in Los Angeles and I have to credit Nancy Silverton for being the best bread maker in the country.  But this pizza is amazing and you should order it!

The following day I went back for more… This time eating at Le Verdure.  The vegetable restaurant!  A Veggie Dreamgirl’s dream!  They do serve some cheese here, but clearly state on the menu what is vegan and what is not.  We had to start with the special of the day appetizer.  Fried shishito peppers topped with oyster salt:

IMG_7326-webMmmmmm!  So good!  Then we got a few salads, the raw vegetable salad

IMG_7321-weband the special of the day salad which was heirloom tomatoes, cucumber, basil and a little fresh ricotta cheese.

IMG_7325-webEverything was fabulous!  You could taste the freshness of all the ingredients and the love behind this entire complex.

Now if you are of the meat eating presuasion, there are plenty of things for you to enjoy as well… just check out the list of restaurants.

This place is a must.  Must see, must eat, must experience!  Just try to stay away during lunch time.

Restaurant Review: La Bella Ferrara, New York

By Leslie · Comments (2) · October 18th, 2011

If you are looking for authentic New York Italian pastries, this is the only place to go.  Now, I can't tell you about all of the pastries: a. because there are so many to choose from and b. because I only ever order two things from here.

IMG_7331-webIt's a family tradition to come to this bakery for cannoli's and the sfogliatelle.  You are probably familiar with what cannoli's are, but sfogliatelle (In Italian means many layers) look like clam shells and they are filled with ricotta flavored with candied orange rind.  They are super super super tasty when done right!  Here they are lined up in their case:

IMG_7332-webAnd cut in half:

IMG_7344-webTheir cannoli's are also out of this world!  Seriously, you aren't going to find better in NY!

Ferraras-webBraving the trip down to tourist filled little Italy is well worth it for the pastries at La Bella Ferrara!  PS just don't confuse it with Ferrara's down the street, totally different place :)

Restaurant Review: Pure Food & Wine, New York City

By Leslie · Comments (3) · October 17th, 2011

According to the New York's tourism board, there are 18,696 restaurants in New York City!  From the research I've done, only about 77 of them are vegetarian… So I started my trip at where many New Yorkers consider vegan mecca… Pure Food and Wine.  It's raw fine dining.  I was so excited to go, I've been hearing about it from just about everyone.  So I grabbed my friend Sarah and we headed to Union Square.

                 Purefoodandwine1 Purefoodandwine2
We ordered the portobello burger and the lasagna.  Both tasted fabulous!  It's lovely to see a fabulous vegan raw restaurant in New York.

That being said, I'm a little torn on this place.  The food was really good, not the best raw vegan food I've ever had, but certainly delicious.  But it was really the tiiiiiny portions (see the picture where my burger is barely bigger than the cherry tomato) with large price tags that got me.  I understood that the combo of being in NY and it being a raw food restaurant that the prices would be higher than I'm used to on the west coast, but the entrees are $24-$26… that's double what I was expecting.

The restaurant definitely has wonderful food and a full bar which is rare to find in a raw spot so if you are with a group of veggies, definitely check it out.  Just remember to bring your wallet!
