Going Vegan is “Sage” Advice

By Leslie · Comments (7) · January 30th, 2013

On the corner of Hipsterville and Echo Park is a gem of a restaurant!  It’s there on Sunset Blvd. that you’ll find Sage Organic Bistro.  I’ve been wanting – but too busy – to check out this place since it first opened back in March 2012, so when I saw a deal on Blackboard Eats for it, I jumped!  I grabbed my friend and fellow major foodie Lynn and we made the trek all the way to the far east side.

There are many things I loved about this restaurant but appearance is definitely a standout.  This is not your typical “hippy” vegan hole-in-the-wall, but instead a simple, clean-lined, modern, cafe.  Crisp white walls and sleek tables welcome you to a decent size dining room.  The specials are posted in chalk on the wall.  The servers were nice, and prompt. And the place was laden with super cool looking people, many taking pictures of their food. And yes, there was even a celebrity spotting – not uncommon here in LA – but you won’t find a lot of pretensions here, just really good food!

The menu was very appetizing!  After taking about 15 minutes to decide Lynn ordered the Soul Bowl and I the Chipotle Bowl.

When the bowls arrived, we were both shocked by the size!  Huge portions are not something you usually get at a vegan restaurant, but we were both super hungry and welcomed the size!  Here’s Lynn’s Soul Bowl (yes, that ball is a deep fried ball of vegan mac n’ cheese!):

And here is my Chipotle Bowl:

And the winner was: The Chipotle Bowl!  The Soul Bowl had the mac n’ cheese ball, which was very yummy (and spicy), and dehydrated okra, which I had never had before and am now wondering why you would ever eat it any other way… was delish!  But the deep fried jalapeno and nacho cheese sauce were stars in the Chipotle Bowl.  Both of us only got through about half a bowl.  But I enjoyed mine (again) for dinner.

Sage’s owners also own Kind Kreme (the vegan ice cream joint on Cahuenga, which I love!) so we knew there would be dessert involved in this lunch.  We’ve both been to Kind Kreme many times so we passed on the ice cream and went for the heavenly-looking cake that was tempting us from the display case all through our meal.  The divine dessert staring back was a raw-vegan espresso chocolate cheesecake. We’ll take it!

We are such goobers! I think we spent two minutes taking pictures of it before we ate it lol!

Holy cow it was delicious!  Bursting with rich flavor this dessert was indeed, heaven!

I almost hate when I go to a restaurant and love what I ordered the first time because I’m then hesitant to try something new the next time I’m there… but this place has a very tempting menu…so I think I’ll tackle the burger section on my next visit!

The best news is that Sage is opening another location on the westside, but ’til then, my advice is to head east!

Happy Eating!

My Favorite Sunny Spot

By Leslie · Comments (6) · June 13th, 2012

It’s about time I write about my favorite vegan restaurant in Los Angeles… People always ask and here’s my answer: Sun Cafe.  It’s a vegan (mostly raw) restaurant on Cahuenga Blvd. right before you get to “the valley”.  Sun Cafe is a bright star in a city filled with mediocre vegan restaurants.  I bring a ton of people here and every time it gets rave reviews not just from my veggie friends, but from my meatie friends too.  It not only has some of the most creative vegan food out there, but by far the tastiest!  When you are preparing raw food you have to be so careful about the flavor combos; it’s very easy to let one ingredient over power the rest and Sun Cafe creates flavor profiles that are virtually effortless.  Now I’ve had just about everything on the menu so let me share some of the stars:

The Lettuce Leaf Tacos:

These tacos are filled with their “SunChorizo” which is just about the best stuff ever, avocado, pico de gallo, and covered in their basil ranch sauce… a great way to start your meal!

The pizzas:

Behold! The only raw pizza worth eating!  Sun Cafe offers you the option of a raw crust or cooked… trust me, go with the raw!  This is the Pesto Pizza, but you cannot go wrong in ordering any of them :)  This one is topped with pesto, marinated mushrooms, tomato, olives, marinated onions and cashew cheese.  You get a choice of sides with a lot of the entrees, but I recommend the kale salad.

A special item:

The day I took these pictures, macaroni and cheese was a special on the menu, so I thought I’d give a try.  This cooked dish was pretty yummy!  The yummiest part was the super creamy nut cheese!  Definitely a good item, but if you’re making your first trip to Sun Cafe try their raw food first.  Some of my other favorite items are the Sweet Kale Shake, the Pad Thai, and Sun Nachos.

AND you cannot leave Sun Cafe without ordering my favorite dessert of all time!  Now let me be more specific… this is not just my favorite raw dessert, or my favorite vegan dessert, this is my favorite dessert period.  It’s the chocolate cheesecake:

One bite of this cake and it’ll be hard for you to have anything else for dessert!  So rich, so smooth, so heavenly!

So be sure to stop by soon!  And if the owner Ron is around make sure to say hi!, he’s a super nice guy!

‘Street’ Food Gone Vegan

By Leslie · Comments (1) · May 11th, 2012

I recently had the distinct pleasure of dining in L.A. at a restaurant of one of my favorite chefs—a woman I’ve looked up to for a long time—accompanied by someone whose food-writing career I love to follow!  I had a spirited lunch with Eric Gladstone of JLiving magazine and the foodie website Now I’m Hungry and we dined at Susan Feniger’s latest restaurant called simply Street.  If you haven’t yet been I’ll spoil this article for you now by saying that you shouldn’t even finish reading… just go!  Susan Feniger is a legend in this town. She’s pioneered some of the most delicious food in Los Angeles, most notably at her world-famous Border Grill. Susan never disappoints and Street is no exception.  The menu boasts street food found around the globe.  But she’s careful not to put too many spins on the plates, leaving diners with some of the most authentic ethnic food they’ll ever experience (even if they never leave L.A.).  Knowing I was a vegan, Eric suggested Street since Susan had recently expanded her vegan options…and trust me, there were far too many to try in just one seating! By the way, all menu items with an “*” can be prepared vegan, no questions asked!

We started our journey —like all good journeys— with a cocktail… This is a version of a moscow mule and was absolutely fabulous! (btw that’s not an Instagram filter but rather the pink hue filtering through the red umbrellas hovering over our heads!)

When it came time to order, we employed my favorite method of deferring to the waiter to bring us his favorite veggie dishes.  And boy did he deliver! What came was a parade of exotic, mouth watering decadence…

the Garden Chopped Salad:

the Vegan Fritters:

the Berbere-spiced French Fries:

the Veggie Burger:

the Rickshaw Noodles:

And for dessert, the Filipino Sticky Rice Tamale:

…which was good, but I say skip and get the Apple Fritters for pure perfection!

If your eyes are full, imagine our bellies! And as I mentioned, they have so many more options!  Next time I’m definitely going for Street’s vegan versions of my favorite Paani Puri and the Golden Tomato Fattoush.

Bottom line: Hit da Street!  It’s the perfect resto for vegans and carnivores alike! How rare is that? Also, be sure to check out Eric’s amazing interview with Susan Feniger and Nancy Silverton (of La Brea Bakery and Mozza fame), another gal I greatly admire in the restaurant business. You can find the interview on pg. 25-29  in JLiving Magazine and follow Eric’s culinary adventures on Twitter.

Cruzin’ for Vegan Pizza in LA

By Leslie · Comments (3) · February 7th, 2012

I can’t believe I am just discovering Cruzer Pizza!  They are a 100% vegan pizza place in Los Feliz, CA.  Now, I was pretty skeptical mainly because I don’t love the taste of fake cheese.  But I have to say, I really really enjoyed my pizza!  By recommendations from my fabulous twitter friends, I ordered the quarry girl (yes, named after the one and only).  It’s piled with olive oil, garlic, mushrooms, vegan sausage, and fresh basil.  It was bursting with flavor which I loved.  The crust was very nice, thin-ish and perfectly crispy.

I do wish there was more of a restaurant to Cruzer Pizza.  I’d love if it had more of a real pizzeria feel, but with the few bar stools facing the wall, the place is really a take out and delivery restaurant.  If you are in Los Angeles, definitely make the trip over, you won’t be disappointed!  I can’t wait to go back and try more like the Falafel Mediterranean pizza and the Ratatouille pizza!

A Very Veggie Dinner at Cru

By Leslie · Comments (4) · January 6th, 2012

Last night I had the pleasure of attending a dinner party with some pretty fabulous people :)  The wonderful folks at Open Sky  (have you been? you should!) hosted Ironman triathlete Brendan Brazier and a few of us lucky writers (code for: bloggers).  I was so excited to eat at Cru because I have heard so many wonderful things!  It’s located in Silverlake right off of Sunset and serves mainly raw vegan food with a few cooked dishes as well.  I have to thank the wonderful Lynn from TheActorsDiet for letting me borrow all these fabulous pics of the evening.

The restaurant is not large, but we managed to squeeze in.  And there is me with none other than miss Lynn :)

The food started rolling out and I didn’t want it ever to end!  These spring rolls were super yummy!

Sure there was the “typical” raw food menu staples: nachos, pizza, lasagna etc. and all were done very well!

the raw nachos

Two stand out dishes were Lynn’s Quisotto (quinoa risotto that you will find me trying to replicate very soon!):

and my VEGAN Mac n’ Cheese:

The evening ended with a divine piece of banana creme pie that you should order as an appetizer because it’s soooo good!

The fabulous ladies from Open Sky even sent us home with wonderful goodie bags!  Inside were Brendan’s cookbook, Devin Alexander‘s The Biggest Loser’s Cookbook, and some yummies from Brendan’s line of nutrition packed foods Vega.  A little review: I think all of my readers out there will really enjoy Brendan’s book Thrive!  It’s filled with fabulous vegan raw and cooked recipes from some of my favorite restaurants all over the country!  Devin’s book has some great workout tips and if you are a fan of the show you’ll be really happy!  The only thing is that the book focusses a lot on meat and protein in that form so if you are a veg there isn’t too much for you in it…

A Day at the Museum…

By Leslie · Comments (1) · September 13th, 2011

Exploring Los Angeles is one of my favorite things to do.  I've lived here a long time and I'm constantly finding new and fun things to do.  I guess that's the joy of living in the second largest city in the US, there is always something new to do.  This particular afternoon was spent at the Annenberg Space for Photography and at lunch with some close friends.  So I guess this is a restaurant review and museum recommendation in one :)

First off, you've got to check out the Annenberg Space for Photography if you haven't been!!  It's a fabulous space to see a collection.  It's located right behind the CAA building in Century City.  Right now they are showing a presentation called Beauty CULTure that runs through November 27th.  If you are into fashion at all, definitely check it out!  There is a display of some of my favorite photos of all time.  Including work from over 100 photographers including Herb Ritts, Tyen, Albert Watson, Susan Anderson and so many more.  There are also videos that play in two spots in the museum.  Don't skip them!

After spending time at the museum, we wandered across the street to the Century City Mall and decided to grab a bite at Breadbar.

Screen shot 2011-09-12 at 11.32.53 PMThey have a fabulous patio and are a perfect spot for a relaxing afternoon!  P.S. they have a happy hour from 3-7pm daily out on the patio.  This afternoon I opted for a little soup :)

0museum2They have great soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers etc.  Obviously, they also have fabulous bread :)

So the moral of this post is to run, don't walk to check out the Annenberg Space for Photography!  And stop by Breadbar for a little happy hour.

Finding Vegetarian Food at Sporting Events

By Leslie · Comments (5) · September 4th, 2011

I do love my fair share of sporting events, but most of the time it means eating before the game.  There just aren't too many vegetarian options that aren't deep fried or smothered in processed cheese (you know I'm talking to you nachos!).  So what's a vegetarian to do?  Well, sometimes there are options.  Yesterday I went to the USC home opener and decided to explore all the vegetarian options :)

USC jumped on the food truck bandwagon by allowing four trucks to pull inside the stadium every game.  Now the trucks rotate so you can't count on any of this food to be here permanently.

0usc2This is fine anyway because the only vegetarian option I found here was sweet potato fries, but they were served with honey mustard which sounds like a fab combination!  I passed on those and continued my journey.  Next stop is the tried and true Senor Corn (you can find them at tunnel 2).  You may recognize them from your local farmers market or fair.  They make three things: roasted corn on the cob, loaded baked potatoes, and sweet potatoes filled with sugar.  I opted for the roasted corn and un-loaded baked potato.

0usc3Yes, I'm aware that's not the most flattering picture of me, but it's the only one I had… And here is my potato with chives and a little bit of salsa:

0usc4Other options for vegetarians at the stadium include french fries, ice cream, funnel cake, and popcorn.  Not the most healthy, but hey look who I ran into:

0usc5Noah from Popsalot!  He is at section 13 and will be selling three varieties of my favorite popcorn all season!  He has his carmel, kettle, and cheese.  Today I went with the kettle since I'd already filled up on so much food!  And ps good to know that his kettle corn is vegan.  So that and the corn on the cob are really the only vegan options at the stadium…

Time to enjoy the game.

0usc1Am I missing anything??  What are your favorite vegetarian options at sporting events?

Restaurant Review: Little Next Door, Los Angeles, CA

By Leslie · Comments (3) · September 2nd, 2011

Do you remember watching old movies and tv shows where people threw “Bon Voyage” parties?  And they were always in the theme of where the couple was going.  Well we decided to throw our good friend Carolina a bon voyage party before she leaves for Argentina.  Instead of an Argentinean theme, we decided on Little Next Door which is a favorite among all my friends!  This is a little French haven on 3rd street.  Gorgeously decorated, fabulous eats, and the patio is perfect for any occasion.

IMG_6976-webUm, yeah… This is my hibiscus champagne cocktail.  Could it be any prettier?  And yes, that is a real hibiscus flower inside that tastes divine!  There was plenty of food ordered to share, but I’m going to share with you the plates that were closest to me :)  These fried and stuffed zucchini blossoms were so good!  They stuff the flower part with cheese and then bread and fry them.  (um… how can you go wrong with that method?)

IMG_6985-webA couple of the falafel sandwiches were ordered.  Yum!  The falafel is served on a french baguette and smeared with tzatziki and stuffed with dill and parsley.  And served with this tasty quinoa salad that has currants in it :)

IMG_6988falafelsandwichI also usually get the soup when I’m there. There are two soups of the day and at least one is always vegan.  Tonight, I got the roasted tomato bisque, but did I get a photo?  Of course not…  But I did snap some super cute pics of the babies in attendance!  (ps I feel so old to have so many friends with babies!)  Here is Tania with Liat:

IMG_6982-webAnd Ashley with Rhys demonstrating what a great walker he is going to be:

IMG_6992-webAnd of course the guest of honor Carolina on the right raising a glass with Brittany.

IMG_6977bandcThere were loads more of my favorite ladies there and this post would be as long as my arm if I posted all of the pictures, but there was a little taste :)

Now the lowdown on Little Next Door.

*Be sure you sit outside.  The patio is so lovely with blue, white and gold trim.  You will instantly be transported to a glamourous far away place!

*Weekdays between 4pm and 7pm beer and wine is 30% off :)

*On that note, they do a lunch and dinner special which includes soup or salad, an entree and a macaroon for a set price.

*Everything I’ve had on the menu is fabulous!  You can’t go wrong.  I hear their burger is one of the best in town, but of course, I’ll let you be the judge.

*Make sure you end the meal with one of their many dessert options.  I love just getting a little macaroon to end the meal.

*Little Next Door is the sister restaurant to The Little Door which is next door!  If you want something super fancy and incredible head over there!  The food and ambiance are to die for.  But if you are looking for that same quality, but in a more laid back setting, Little Next Door is the place for you.

PS they also do catering and picnic baskets which are great for the Hollywood Bowl.

Little Next Door

8142 West 3rd Street

Los Angeles, CA 90048
(next door to The Little Door)

This place is really a fantastic option for anyone traveling to Los Angeles, there is a little glitz, a little glamour, and the occasional star sighting to satisfy any tourist needs.  So whether you live in LA or Timbuktu, make sure you check out Little Next Door.

Bon Voyage Carolina!!

Restaurant Review: Momed, Beverly Hills, CA

By Leslie · Comments (5) · August 31st, 2011

There is a stretch of street in Beverly Hills that I just adore!  It's not the typical street you think of when you think of Beverly Hills, it's the more local side of it.  It's South Beverly Drive.  South of Wilshire you'll find quaint restaurants, fun shops and jewelry stores to drool over.  No, the Hollywood Tour buses don't go down this way, so you don't really have to worry about all those photo-taking tourists.  Down here it's the professionals grabbing lunch and the locals relaxing in one of the many outdoor restaurants.  It was on this street I grabbed an early dinner with two great friends.  Always in the know, my friend Jenn suggested this new Mediterranean cafe Momed.  My friend Briana was smart enough to have her phone with her and snagged these pictures of dinner for us. :)

Screen shot 2011-08-31 at 8.40.08 AM

Momed stands for modern Mediterranean and that's exactly what you'll get here.  The decor makes you feel like you are in some uber cool European cafe with glass cases full or delightful salads and desserts.  And the food, well, we'll get to that in a second.  There is plenty of indoor seating, but come on it's LA, if it's not raining, opt to sit outside on the patio to take in the energy from the street.

The menu is super eclectic gathering dishes from Jerusalem to Athens to Marrakech to Istanbul and delivering all of them with fresh, organic, and seasonal ingredients.

Ok alright already… the food!  We ordered a bunch of small plates to share.  I'll start with my personal favorite the muhammara which is a dip originally found in Syria but very popular in Turkish cuisine as well:

0momed2Muhammara is not only fun to say, but Momed's version is delicious!  It's made from roasted red peppers, walnuts and pomegranate.

Another favorite was the avocado hummus!

0momed3Not your typical hummus and pita.  First of all the pita is to die for and second adding avocado to hummus gives it this smooth velvety texture which is just fabulous.  And the best way to eat your avocado hummus is with a little muhammara on top!

We also got some seasonal salads that are not on the permanent menu.  The corn and israeli couscous salad was fab.

0momed4and Briana and Jenn really enjoyed the beets over arugula.

Momed1We also had the lentil salad which was good, but of course we scarfed it before we could even get a photo :(  For dessert, we tried the baklava trio.

0momed5Now, I'm a tough judge when it comes to baklava because as you probably know by now, I'm totally obsessed with Bakluvit baklava.  So Momed's didn't even come close to theirs, but the idea of a cashew baklava was a good idea.

UPDATE: Momed is now serving bakluvit baklava!!!

Overall, definitely check this place out.  I suggest going for a late lunch/early dinner.  Grab a table outside, invite some friends to join you and order a bunch of shared plates, a glass (or bottle) of wine and skip the dessert.  Your waistline doesn't need it anyway :) And enjoy!

Top 5 LA Vegan Restaurants…

By Leslie · Comments (13) · August 9th, 2011

I get asked a lot about my favorite vegan restaurants.  As you can see here on the website I like to focus my restaurant reviews on how to eat vegan at a “normal” restaurant.  Maybe some are mad I’m not focussing more on the plethora of amazing veg restaurants we have here in our city.  So here is a list of my cannot live without vegetarian/vegan and or raw restaurants in Los Angeles.  Please note, that I do not like fake meat so all my reviews will be based on dishes besides those.  Look for formal restaurant reviews to follow soon.

1.  Picture 8 Picture 7

This place is where it’s at!  Almost entirely raw and absolutely perfect in every way!  Just to prove how much I love it: I hardly ever eat out (duh, I’m always trying to come with recipes :) ) but I’ve eaten at Sun Cafe twice this week so far… Their pizzas, sandwiches, salads are little pieces of art.  The restaurant is cute and a place I would not be ashamed to bring a date (more than I can say for most veg. restaurants) And most importantly they win the award for best vegan raw dessert I’ve ever had, the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Cheesecake!

2.  Picture 5

Veggie Grill does vegetarian food right!  It’s clean, casual dining at it’s best.  Almost all the food is “cooked” here, but that’s fine with me.  The menu is extensive and delicious.  They have sweet potato fries that are to die for!  They seem to be expanding at a rapid pace, so look for one heading to your neighborhood soon.  Bonus: if you sign up for their mailing list you get a coupon for a free dinner for your birthday :)

3.  Picture 3

The new kid on the scene is making a big splash!  Originating in San Francisco, Cafe Gratitude opened a great location on Larchmont Blvd.  Their menu has adorable names for all the items starting with an “I am” to go with the “gratitude” theme.  They serve raw and cooked food as well as a selection of vegan wine and beer possibly making this spot the best vegetarian place for a date in town…

4.  Picture 2

Home to the best raw and vegan ice cream ever!  I personally love the soft serve.  (I do a chocolate/vanilla swirl)  Many locations popping up so definitely stop by to satisfy that sweet tooth without destroying your diet!

5.    Picture 1

This is the kind of place you can feel completely comfortable bringing a meat eater.  The traditional Thai dishes done vegetarian proves to me that Asian was intended to be made without fish sauce.  Two locations are up already and let’s hope for more!

So those are my top 5.  How do you feel about these??  Don’t see your favorite on the list?  Let me know about it.  Chances are I may have not been yet.

Happy Eating!
