Dinner Party

By Leslie · Comments (2) · September 11th, 2009

Last night Sim and I went over to our friends house for dinner.  Justin Urich is an old friend of Sim's; he acted in the first movie Sim produced.  (It's called "Winter Break" and really cute if you are looking for a movie at blockbuster for tonight!)  And we got to meet his ever-so-wonderful girlfriend Barbara!  Justin and Barbara are quite a team in the kitchen!  They heard I was a vegetarian and prepared a veggie feast to satisfy any meat eater. (even Sim!)  They made a delicious heirloom tomato bruschetta and a wild mushroom, asparagus risotto!  Very yummy!  And I brought a molten lava chocolate cake for dessert.  We talked, we laughed, we shared a lot of wine!  In fact we were drinking very good, unusual wines from South Africa that our friends Karl and Heather, who were just there, were nice enough to ship a case to us.  It's called "Lion Hunt" if you get a chance to look for it.  The Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon are really wonderful!
Here is my recipe for the dessert we had.  It's a great dinner party dessert cause it is A. Delicious and B. you can make is hours ahead of time, pop it in the oven for 7 minutes and have a fabulous dessert! (FYI this is an old Martha Stewart classic recipe)

Chocolate Molten Lava Cake

What you’ll need:

 1 stick of butter

4 oz. Valrona Chocolate (or really good rich chocolate)

 2 eggs

 2 egg yolks

 ¼ cup sugar

 2 tbsp. sifted flour

 What you’ll do:

Coat 6 ramekins with butter and cocoa. Place on a cookie sheet. (when flouring anything for a chocolate cake, use cocoa and you won't get the white flour all over your beautiful cake!)
In a double broiler, melt the chocolate  and butter
In a kitchenaid or bowl, mix the eggs, yolks, and sugar
Gradually, mix in the chocolate
Add 2 tbsp. sifted flour
Pour into the ramekins.
Bake 7-10 minutes at 450 degrees
Remove from oven and one by one run a knife around the edges and dump over onto plate.  Accompany with vanilla bean ice cream, fresh fruit, or freshly whipped cream.
Enjoy!
Hopefully I can get some pictures and maybe even a recipe from Justin and Barbara; cross your fingers!

How to throw an amazing party (part 2)

By Leslie · Comments (3) · August 31st, 2009

Well, we did it!  Party was fabulous and fun!  Ivonne's jewelry was beautiful!!  And there is no food left (sure sign of a successful party)  So some of the ladies are dying for recipes so here you go!

Blue Cheese Gougeres

What you'll need:

1 cup Whole Milk

4 tablespoons Unsalted Butter

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/8 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper

1/8 teaspoon Cayenne Pepper

1/4 teaspoon Paprika

1/2 teaspoon Oregano

1/4 teaspoon Garlic Salt

1 cup all-purpose flour

4 Eggs, room temperature

1/4 lb. Gorgonzola Cheese

What you'll do:

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a large saucepan, combine the milk, butter, salt, black pepper, and all the spices over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, then remove from the heat. Add the flour, and stir constantly with a large wooden spoon to incorporate, about 1 minute. Make sure to fully incorporate all the flour.  Return to medium-high heat and cook, stirring constantly, for about 1 minute. Remove from the heat and add the eggs one at a time, beating well after the addition of each. (I use my electric mixer to really blend in the eggs.)  Add the cheese and beat until mixed well and a slightly soft dough forms.

Snip the tip of a plastic bag.  Place the dough in the bag and form peaks on the baking sheet.  Or drop the dough by the spoonful. Bake for 10 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 350 degrees, and bake until golden brown, about 20 to 25 minutes.

Remove from the oven and serve immediately, or at room temperature.

Greek Salad on a Stick

What you'll need:

1 jar pitted Kalamata Olives

12 small Grape Tomatoes

1/4 lb. Feta cheese, cubed

Fresh Oregano Leaves

Red Wine Vinegar

Olive Oil

What you'll do:

Assemble on a toothpick in this order: Oregano Leaf, Olive, Tomato, Feta.  Stand them on end on a platter.  Drizzle with the Red Wine Vinegar and Olive Oil.  (they are really that easy!)

Spinach Artichoke Dip

(a true crowd pleaser and favorite of friends!)

What you’ll need: 1 14oz can of Artichoke hearts, drained and chopped 1 10oz package of frozen spinach, thawed and strained 1 cup mayonnaise or veganaise ( I use veganaie, it's a little better for you) 1 cup grated parmesan cheese 2 ½ cups shredded Monterey jack cheese 1/2 Purple Onion, chopped What you’ll do: Preheat oven to 350 degrees Lightly grease a 1 quart baking dish Mix artichoke hearts, spinach, purple onion, mayo, parmesan cheese, and 2 cups of Monterey jack cheese Pour mixture into baking dish and sprinkle with remaining cheese Bake for about 15 minutes or until cheese is melted This party was so much fun!  I want to thank Ivonne and everyone who came!!  Let's do it again soon! Here are some shots of the food and the girls!

How to throw an amazing party (part 1)

By Leslie · Comments (0) · August 30th, 2009

Seems like a lot of you are interested in party foods.  So, it just so happens I am throwing a party today for my friend Ivonne.  She is a brilliant jewelry designer who is going to show off her stuff and hopefully sell it all : )  My part is to supply the house and the food.  I'm going to walk you through exactly what it takes to have a great party!

There are the first few key ingredients.

Have a theme! (this is going to be a girly party, explanation to follow)

Have great cocktails! (in this case orange and peach mimosas)

Have plenty of foods to nibble on. (You don't want your guest getting too tipsy!)

Always add some fresh flowers!  (this makes everything that much nicer)

Always, always, always have a candle burning in the restroom!!  You don't want to embarrass anyone or have your guests talking.

Since we are having a jewelry party I decided a girly theme would be appropriate.  That means girly foods you can eat with your hands. (forks and knives are a pain!!)  Pretty cocktails, pretty colors, pretty flowers etc.

Here is the menu:

 Fruit tower

Blue cheese gourges

 Spinach Artichoke Dip

 Cheese Plate

 Greek Salad sticks

Zucchini and goat cheese roll ups

 Cold cut platter

 Heirloom tomato bruschetta

 Madeleine Cookies

Triple Chocolate Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting

 Daisy Lemon Cake

 And Orange Peach Mimosas!

Ok, one of the other most important things for a successful party: LISTS!!!  Detailed lists of everything you are making and check it off as you go. (you don't want to remember 5 minutes before people get there that you forgot a key dish) On that note I'll continue this post tonight after the party : )
