A Modern Organic Vintage Eclectic Baby Shower

By Leslie · Comments (14) · April 12th, 2011

I love throwing showers!  This weekend I got to co-throw a baby shower for one of my closest friends, Autumn.  Autumn has recently started a fabulous blog called M.O.V.E Lifestyle which stands for Modern Organic Vintage Eclectic (definitely check it out!), so we used that as our inspiration for this party.  So without further ado, let’s down to it!

Here is the darling invitation: 11111bs1

The very talented Jenn from Way of the Wong designed these cute guys! We just loved these little owls and used them throughout the entire shower.

For more on the invites, see here.

Here is the sign that the very talented Ashley from Coco Rose Events painted:

The sign hung at the front gate to let people know where the party was. (my house can be tricky to find)

When you walked in, you could see the table all set up.  We chose to go with one long table and served the food family style to create a more intimate setting.

111111bs3As guests came in, we had them grab a cocktail,

then we had them write some words of wisdom to the parents-to-be on a little tag and had them hang them on this tree made from a manzanita branch:

11111bs9 We also had all of the guests bring an unwrapped kids book and we had them personalize them with these book plates.  Sweet right?  I love giving books at a baby shower!

We had all the guests drinking out of mason jars with these little owl stir sticks:

Here are some shots of the table:

11111bs11We used old wine bottles with the labels removed as water pitchers and all the flower arrangements were done in re-used cans and jars.

111111bs12The name cards doubled as the favors.  I planted herb and vegetable plants in soup cans, then we tied ribbon around them and sealed them together with a sticker with each guests name on it.  The place mats are a sheet of scrapbooking paper with an owl stamped in the corner.  These gave the place setting a little personality.

Ok, here comes the good stuff: the food!  Like I mentioned, we did family style, so all the food was on the table as the guests sat down.  We served quiche, 3 different tea sandwiches (cucumber, caprese and chicken salad), mixed green salad and orzo salad.

000000bs1 0000000bs2We turned my dining room table into the dessert table.  I had some butcher paper so we laid it out on the table, placed the desserts on top and used crayons to identify all the goodies.

00bs2
I made chocolate salted carmel cupcakes, red velvet cupcakes, salted chocolate chip cookies ”potted” chocolate pudding (I saw these in Martha Stewart’s magazine months ago and have been dying to make them!) and Autumn’s Mom made her famous cheesecake.

00bs1How cute are those little picks?  Our friend Courtney made them.  They are little owls!

Here is the Mom to be in front of the “It’s a Boy” sign:

00004I absolutely loved throwing this shower!  I hope you enjoyed reading about it : )

Tools I used:

Owl Stamps

Clothespins

By Leslie · Comments (2) · December 24th, 2010

I hope all your holidays are going fabulous!  It's that time of year when we all go home and see family.  This week we've been at my in-laws.  One of the most fabulous things about going to my in-laws is that it means amazing food and Indian cooking lessons for me : )  My Mother in-law is a wonderful cook and I love learning from her.  This trip she was nice enough to host this beautiful tea party!  Check out the exotic foods and incredible attention to detail:

A Storybook Theme Baby Shower

By Leslie · Comments (5) · December 21st, 2010

Yes, it's the time in my life where everyone I know is having babies.  I love this time because I get to be a fabulous Auntie and I get to help throw these amazing showers!!  Here is one we threw for my sister.  Yes, if you are keeping tabs this is her second shower, first one was in a different city.  You can see that school theme shower here.  There was a lot of help with this shower so I can't take all of the credit.  I threw this one with my Mom and my sister and sister in-law.

Shower1{PS another thing I can't take credit for is this adorable sign that my very talented Uncle made!  So cute right?!}

So our theme: Storybook!  My sister was and is a big reader so this theme was a perfect way to start her child's library.

For the decor: We used a lot of books!  Here you can se we used some real books displayed around the house and then we printed some book covers from the internet and framed them in these ever so cute red frames.  To make the vase, we taped the four frames together from behind and slipped in the flower arrangement.  The red frames came from Ikea.

           Shower2 Shower3
We really stuck to the primary colors with all the flowers and decorations.

Here was the lunch table:

Shower4The menu was as follows:

Beverages:

Iced Mango Tea, Mint Lemonade, Champagne Punch, Hot Apple Cider, Coffee and Tea

Lunch:

3 kinds of wraps: Grilled Vegetable, Turkey with Provolone and Roast Beef with Horseradish, Mac n' Cheese, Roasted Tomato Soup, Fruit Salad and Rainbow Salad.

Dessert:

My sister in-laws gorgeous decorated cookies and chocolate dipped oreos and brownies.

Shower5

Shower6How cute are these pots for the soup?!  My Mom found them at Cost Plus World Market.   How cute are these pots for the soup?!  My Mom found them at Cost Plus World Market.

Birthday Cake!

By Leslie · Comments (1) · September 20th, 2010

It was one of my best girlfriends birthday parties this past weekend and I learned a few things about traveling with desserts in the hot desert. . .

The Birthday party was at The Ace Hotel in Palm Springs.  If you don't know where that is, it's about 2 hours east of Los Angeles out in the desert.  It was a great weekend!  Warm weather, hanging out by the pool and flowing champagne : )

So here's what I made:

6a012876272fb6970c0133f465f195970b-800wi

I made a two tiered carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, red velvet cupcakes and chocolate cupcakes with carmel frosting!  Yum!

Tip of the Day:

When you are writing on a cake with frosting, always use a toothpick to write what you like.  You can always smooth the icing over to change it.  Then use your colored icing to trace the tracks left from the toothpick.  It'll always come out perfect!

Christmas Eve Dinner

By Leslie · Comments (0) · December 24th, 2009

1193071743IQjNUY

Italian Americans celebrate Christmas Eve with "The Feast of Seven Fishes".  This is for the celebration of the "wait" till midnight.

Traditionally, you never eat "meat" on Christmas Eve.  And this is how you get to 7: The traditional Biblical number for divinity is three and Earth is four, and the combination of these numbers, seven, represents God on Earth, or Jesus Christ.

So, here is our menu:

Shrimp Cocktail

Ahi Tuna Sushi

Octopus Salad

Calamari Arrabiata  (flash fried calamari topped with a spicy tomato sauce)

Muscles, Steamed

Linguine and Clams

Fish Platter

So start a tradition in your family from your heritage.  It makes the meal that much more special!

Happy Christmas Eve!

Winter Girls Party!

By Leslie · Comments (5) · December 7th, 2009

It's December and finally starting to get a little chilly here in Los Angeles.  What better excuse do I need to throw a little holiday girls brunch!  I called up some friends and my friend Ivonne brought over some of her beautiful jewelry to sell as holiday gifts.  I cooked up a storm and we had a great time!  Here are some pictures of the food and decor!
I had to throw in a picture of the tree!!  I looooove getting a Christmas tree!
For the food, I really wanted to do lots of sweet and savory foods.  As usual, I made everything bite size and foods to eat with your fingers.  I do this for two reasons.  One is to reduce the amount of waste we use (no need to throw away all those plastic utensils!).  And the other is that I hate when you can't have your food and your drink at the same time.  I hate parties when you have to sit down to use a fork and knife to eat your food.  I save that for dinner parties!

Here was the menu:

Pumpkin dip (so cute served in a hollowed out acorn squash!) (The best thing to do with leftover pumpkin pie mix!  I used 2 boxes of cream cheese and whipped it together with half a large can of pumpkin pie mix.  I added a little extra cinnamon and nutmeg for a little more kick!)  Thanks Aunt Patty

 Ratatouille in a puff pastry
Baked brie (cause I had leftover puff pastry from the above dish)

Vegetarian Ceviche

 Scones

 Cucumber dill sandwiches

Tomato salad (I just tossed some beautiful heirloom tomatoes in some white wine vinegar, olive oil, salt, pepper, fresh dill and basil and topped it with some shredded mozzarella.  So easy!)

Fruit on a stick (how fun are these!?  I needed a great take on a fruit salad and I love the way these little sticks came out!  I used toothpicks and skewered a raspberry, mint leaf, pineapple and strawberry.  So easy!)
Chocolate, carmel, salty cupcakes (see below blog for pictures and recipes)

Chocolate chip cookies (I used my regular chocolate chip cookie recipe, but I added cinnamon and nutmeg to make it yummier for the holiday!)

Chocolate "chips" and cannoli cream "dip" (love playing on chips and dips with this!  I got the "chips" at trader joes and I made my cannoli cream as the dip!  Soo good!!)
I made a lot of variety, but I couldn't stop, what can I say?  I'm a cook-a-holic!

Here are some of the girls that made it to the party!  So pretty!
Such a fun party!!  I can't wait till spring for the next one!

Baby Shower part 2

By Leslie · Comments (1) · November 17th, 2009

The shower was very successful!!  We all had a great time!!  Please enjoy these pictures and recipes! 1111shower5Me, Kelly and my Mom! While everyone arrived, we served a couple appetizers, "jungle punch" and pink champagne with blueberries!  Here is the recipe for our jungle punch that was delicious!!

1111shower6

1111shower7 1111shower8Here is the first guessing game we played while everyone mingled during appetizers.  Guess how many m & m's are in the bottle.  The person closest won a prize.  This is a nice game to do while people are first coming in and can write their guess at their own leisure.

1111shower9We played a memory game next.  We loaded a tray with a bunch of baby items and covered it with a sheet.  Everyone got a piece of paper and a pen.  We took the sheet of the tray for about 1 minute and then covered it again.  Everyone had to write down all the items they remembered on the tray.  The person who got the most won a prize!

1111shower11Here is Kelly showing off her beautiful belly (in a adorable dress from 'pea in the pod') in our next game!  Everyone got a ball of yarn and had to cut a piece they thought perfectly measured her belly.  Here is a picture of everyone measuring!

1111shower12Lunch!  Here are some pics of what we ate!

1111shower13We served three kinds of sandwiches.  From top to bottom we made: cucumber, watercress on wheat, turkey and cranberry on potato bread, chicken salad on sourdough and cheese puffs.  Finger sandwiches are great for luncheons!  Everyone loves them and you don't need utensils!

1111shower14I made a caprese inspired salad.  I just used mixed greens, chopped basil, cherry tomatoes and small mozzarella balls!  I dressed it in a homemade balsamic dressing, but you can make your own or use store bought. Here is a picture of the orzo salad, chicken curry salad and zucchini rolls

1111shower15After lunch, we did a little art project!  It was so fun!!!  We painted onesies for the baby!  Here are the tools needed:

1111shower16Paper towels, heat n' bond, puff paint, scissors, cute fabric characters, onesies (we got a variety of sizes to keep the growing baby outfitted), and a piece of cardboard.

You are going to iron on the heat n' bond to the fabric character then with the scissors cut it out.  Then iron on the character to the onesie.  Place the cardboard in the onsie. (so it doesn't bleed through!)  And paint around the character and the rest of the onsie.

1111shower18

1111shower19

Here's me painting my onsie for the baby!  And here are all the onesies done!:

1111shower21Sooooo cute!!!!  And now the baby will have all sorts of fabulous clothes to wear!! We finished the day with some yummy desserts and opened gifts!!  (my favorite part of the day!)

1111shower22I made some mini cupcakes in red velvet and carrot cake!  A triple chocolate bundt cake! : )  And those are free form cheesecake parfaits with fresh fruit!  So yummy!!!  Here is the recipe.

1111shower24Well, that was the shower!  I hope you enjoyed and found this helpful for your next baby shower bash!

Jungle Baby Shower! (part 1)

By Leslie · Comments (4) · November 16th, 2009

Last weekend my Mom and I planned my sister in-laws baby shower!!  So excited!  Kelly is my beautiful, wonderful sister in-law and is nice enough to let me document her shower!  Our theme is "Jungle Animal Babies" As I say whenever I plan a party, it takes 3 days.  Day 1 is creating the menu and shopping.  Day 2 is prepping all the food (meaning baking everything that needs to be baked, washing, chopping all that) and decorating.  Day 3 is putting everything together and the party.  This is the most efficient way to throw a party!

The shower was on Sunday so on Friday, my Mom and I created a menu and went out and bought all the food.  Then Saturday, we did all the baking, prepping and decorating.  For the menu, we are sticking to some go-to classics with a little touch of new recipes.  When you are throwing a large party, I recommend you stick to things you've made before.  An experiment gone wrong can ruin your day.

Here is the menu:

 Appetizers

Tortilla roll-ups (made by my fabulous Aunt Margie and cousin Christy)

Acapulco Dip (made by my fabulous Aunt Margie and cousin Christy)

 Blue cheese gourges

 Zucchini roll-ups

 Fall Salad

Orzo Salad

Finger Sandwiches: Turkey and cranberry, chicken salad and cucumber, watercress

 Mini red velvet cupcakes

 Mini carrot cakes

 Triple Chocolate Bundt cake

 Cheesecake Parfait with fruit

Beverages: Jungle Punch with a fresh fruit ring

Pink Champagne, with blueberries floated (we don't know if it's a girl or a boy!)

 Wine

 Lemon Water

So Day 2 we baked the cakes, made the cheesecake and and gourges and prepped the zucchini, chicken salad and sliced the turkey breast.  Getting all these things out of the way will make assemble on Day 3 so much easier! Another great tip is to label all of the serving dishes you are going to use with a post-it of what you are going to put in them.  This way, you know you have a platter for everything and you won't forget any of your dishes! Here are some of the awesome decorations!

1111shower1

My Mom, who is amazing with flowers, did this arrangement in a trash can we found at Target!  I think it turned out adorable!!  She cut florist's green foam to fit in the opening and then just arranged the flowers and filled with water.  They have so many cute trash cans in the bathroom section, they had frogs, ducks, etc.

1111shower2This sign was so cute!!  My very talented Uncle made this.  He free handed the animals that were on the bedding she registered for.  This made a great addition to the decor!  If you are not as artistic (like me!) you could make a similar sign with butcher paper and stencils.

1111shower3These were the table centerpieces.  We got a little plant and wrapped it in a piece of burlap and tied it with a piece of twine.  We then set the plant on a woven plate charger and added some jungle beany babies.  (was nice to reuse those little guys) We also had some jungle stuffed animals around the house and little toy plastic ones we decorated the food with which you will see in the next post. : )

Here is a pic of our fresh fruit ring for the jungle punch.  I love making these anytime I make punch!  I think it adds a really nice touch!  It keeps the punch cold and as it melts you have beautiful fruit floating in it!

1111shower4Use a bundt pan and place mint leaves and all your favorite fruit inside.  Gently fill with water and freeze overnight.  When you take it out the next day, run the metal side under some warm water until the ring pops out.  If you try to force it, it might break.

Stay tuned for tomorrows post when I include finished shots and recipes!

Cage Fight! Butternut Squash vs. Pumpkin

By Leslie · Comments (0) · October 30th, 2009

pumpkinandsquash "In Season" was the theme last night!  I made pomegranate, pumpkin and butternut Squash.  I made dinner for Sim's Brother Suveer (here from NY), his sister Sahiba and her boyfriend Keith.  It was a "Throw Down Royale!"

Here was the menu:

Salad with avocado, tomatoes and pomegranate seeds

 Marinated  Grilled Chicken

 A cage fight between:

Pumpkin Polenta and Butternut Squash Risotto

We had the chocolate chip pumpkin muffins for dessert with some hot apple cider Such a yummy fall meal!  Here is how I did everything!:

The Salad: I used mache and arugula lettuces with hass avocados, cherry tomatoes and pomegranate seeds.  I dressed it with a red wine vinaigrette.  Click here for a trick to getting pomegranate seeds out of the fruit.

salad

So after a vote, the butternut squash risotto won 3-1.  Here is the recipe for the winner!

DSCN2177

Here they are!  Too bad risotto had to kick the polenta's butt in the taste challenge!! Let me know if there are ever any two recipes you'd like to compare and we'll continue the "cage fighting"! Here are Sahiba and Keith enjoying the muffins! DSCN2179

Game Day!

By Leslie · Comments (5) · September 13th, 2009

So today was USC game day at the Sarna house.  That meant two things, our house would be taken over by hard core fans, and I would make a bunch of yummy food!  Thank goodness SC pulled out a win in the end! (Sim can get very depressed when they lose)  I decided on a menu of American Classics.  Here is what I made: Spinach Artichoke Dip (a definite crowd pleaser, see "jewelry party" blog for recipe) Pulled Pork Sandwiches Beef Sliders Coleslaw Italian Pasta Salad Cheesy Potatoes Red Velvet Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting Here are some recipes:

  Beef Sliders

 What you'll need:

5 lbs. of Ground Chuck Beef

1 medium yellow onion, diced finely

5 cloves of garlic, chopped finely

 2 Tbsp. Worcestershire Sauce

 2 Eggs

 A Handful of chopped Parsely

 A Handful of Parmesan Cheese

 Salt and Pepper

 What you'll do:

Easy Peezy!  Just mix it all together in a big bowl with your hands and form patties.  You can make hamburger size or slider size which is what we did.  Then just grill.

  Coleslaw

 What you'll need:

1 package of Coleslaw (mix of cabbage, purple cabbage and carrots)

1 can of Mandarin Oranges, drained and roughly chopped

1 ear of Corn, cooked and zipped

 2 Scallions, chopped

 1/2 cup Veganaise of Mayonaise

 2 tbsp. Milk

 1/2 cup Sugar

 1 tbsp. ground Celery Seed

 2 tbsp. Cider Vinegar

 What you'll do:

In a medium bowl, combine the cabbage, oranges, corn, and scallions.  In a small bowl whisk the mayo, milk, sugar and celery seed.  When it's smooth, add the Vinegar.  Dress the salad and serve cold. Be creative with this one, you can add chicken, shrimp, nuts, tofu, anything you like. : )Coleslaw

Cheesy Potatoes (also been known as Party Potatoes)

This is the greatest recipe!  My Mom used to make this when we were kids for all of our pool parties (hence how it got its alternative name)  It's really easy and tasty.

 What you'll need:

 2 lbs. frozen hash browns

 ½ cup melted butter

 1 tsp. salt

 ½ tsp. pepper

 2 Tbsp. chopped onions

1 can cream of mushroom soup

1 pint of sour cream (remember, fat-free is the only vegetarian one)

 2 cups grated cheddar cheese

 2 cups crushed corn flakes

 ¼ cup butter melted

 What you'll do:

Heat oven to 350 degrees.  Combine all ingredients in large bowl.  Pour into a buttered 9 x 13 dish.  Top with corn flakes and melted butter.  Bake for about 20 minutes or until cheese is melted in the center. Cheesy Potatoes

Red Velvet Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting

 What you'll need:

 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

 1 ½ cups sugar

 1 teaspoon baking soda

 1 teaspoon salt

 4 tablespoons cocoa powder

 1 cup vegetable oil

1 ½ cups buttermilk, room temperature

 2 large eggs, room temperature

 2 tablespoons red food coloring

 1 teaspoon white distilled vinegar

 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

 Frosting:

8 oz. (1 package) cream cheese, softened

 1 stick of butter, softened

 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 pound of confectioners’ sugar (powdered sugar)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Line a cupcake pan with liners.  In a medium mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.  In a large bowl gently beat together the oil, buttermilk, eggs, food coloring, vinegar, and vanilla with a mixer.  (careful when you first turn on.  Start on low then build up or the red dye with splash on you!)  Add the sifted dry ingredients to the wet and mix until smooth and thoroughly combined.  Bake for 20 minutes. In a large mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese, butter and vanilla together until smooth.  Add the sugar.  Beat until light and fluffy.  Frost the cupcakes when cool.  I took some of the leftover frosting, dyed it red and wrote "GO" and "USC" on them.

Red Velvet Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting

 Fight On!
