Forks Over Knives…

By Leslie · Comments (1) · June 17th, 2011

It may come as a bit of a surprise, but… I'm a vegetarian.  Oh, I know you know this, you read my blog, but a lot of people in my life, don't.  It's not that I keep it a secret, but it's not something that I wear on my forehead.  I really believe what you eat is a personal life decision, so I try not to preach too much.  But, that being said, there is a documentary out there I believe everyone in the world should see.

Picture 1

It's called Forks Over Knives.  It's a documentary about what we put in our bodies and how it directly affects our health.  It delivers the information in a way that's really easy to understand and "swallow".  Of course I am mentioning this film because it encourages a plant based "whole food" diet.  Now that doesn't mean Whole Foods the grocery store, it means eating the fruit instead of eating the fruit flavored food.  This doc is everything that I believe in.

Do yourself a favor, vegetarian or not, check it out this weekend.  So far it's only showing in the US and Canada, be sure to email them if you'd like to see the film in your city.  For cities and show times, click here.  Have you seen it??  I'd love to hear what you thought of it!

Happy eating!

Our Second Anniversary at The Ace in Palm Springs

By Leslie · Comments (2) · June 6th, 2011

Seeing as how I did a recap of our first anniversary at Bacara here, I thought I'd share the second as well : )

We love traveling with the pups, so we're always on the lookout for cool places that will let us bring them.  My girlfriend Autumn had her birthday party at The Ace Hotel last year and we had such a great time, we thought we'd do it again.

0ace1The Ace Hotel in Palm Springs is a real throw back (in a completely fun way!).  The rooms are decorated really cool and since we were bringing the dogs we opted for a room with a "front yard" which included a fireplace, lounge couch, table and a rocking chair.

Patio_w_fireplace-1Pepe and Carson really enjoyed hanging around out there:

0ace7

The hotel has two pools and even a little dog run for the pups.  The weather was perfect!

0ace9The morning before we left we stopped into the restaurant at the hotel for a little breakfast.  The restaurant used to be a Denny's that they remodeled and made into the uber chic King's Highway Roadside Diner.  I opted for the ricotta hotcakes with maple crunch butter and bananas.

0ace8Ummm, yummm!  They were huge, but delicious!

The Ace is really a gem and is full of so many hidden delights!  I would definitely recommend this place for it's super cool pool scene, it's fabulous food, and it's insightful comforts.  Palm Springs is 2 hours from Los Angeles, but feels like a world away!

A Day at the Getty

By Leslie · Comments (2) · April 29th, 2011

Happy Friday!  Looking for something fabulous to do this weekend?  Well if you are in Los Angeles, head to The Getty Museum!  I loooove it here.  It's so beautiful and relaxing!  They have a lovely cafe, fabulous gardens and they have a brand new Parisian art exhibit too {bonus!}.  I spent the afternoon there the other day with my friend Autumn who just started a wonderful blog MoveLifestyle.com Check it out : )  We've both been working on our photography skills and this is a wonderful place to practice because everything is so gorgeous it's hard to take a bad picture.  Here are a couple:

0001get5The Getty also has a fabulous restaurant that serves fresh, seasonal, delicious dishes.  Here was my salad and our dessert of macarons and madelines.

Spring Forward!

By Leslie · Comments (3) · March 14th, 2011

So yesterday was daylight savings and we officially sprung into spring!  Now this means two thing: 1. a little less sleep. 2. bikini season is almost here!!

50s-pinup-bikini-doll-1No more mac n' cheese for me; it's now being replaced with salads and snacks.  This brings me to my next important point.  Snacks!  Being a model for many years, I come from the school of thought that the more you eat the more you lose.  Eating 6-7 small portions a day will increase your metabolism, whereas eating once or twice a day will slow it down.  Now that doesn't mean eating 6-7 meals of high fatty foods.  I mean eating very, very nutritious (and yummy) foods.  Here are my 5 favorite snacks:

1. Guacamole with celery sticks  (I feel so much better by eating this with celery instead of chips!)

2. Popcorn!

3. Hummus in a Cucumber cup

4. Jicama Bites

5. Beet and Avocado Salad

So let's get in shape together!

xoxo

Phrase of the Day: Mise en Place

By Leslie · Comments (0) · January 17th, 2011

So you may have heard this phrase tossed around a lot.  I know I've been getting a lot of questions about it. Top Chef, Hell's Kitchen and basically any show on the Food Network are constantly using this term.  So what does "mise en place" mean?  Well, first off, it's pronounced miz a plas.  It literally means putting in place. It's prepping all of your ingredients so it's much easier to assemble them when cooking.  It's measuring out all of your ingredients and placing them in individual bowls.  It also includes washing and cutting all ingredients.

If you have never used this method, definitely give it a try!  Especially when baking! {and Chinese food} It makes it so much easier to have all the ingredients right there ready to go.

So there you go, hopefully you learned something today : )

Chia Seeds

By Leslie · Comments (5) · January 5th, 2011

Cha Cha Cha Chia!  Yup, I'm talking about the same seeds that were used to grow those funny chia pets when you were a kid.   Chia-puppy

Who knew the unbelievable health benefits that come from eating the seeds?!  I can't believe I've gone so long without knowing much about these.  I have to thank my Uncle Alan for educating me about these.  We were staying at his house over Christmas and he picked up a scoopful of chia seeds and ate them.  Now my Uncle knows his stuff when it comes to health, he's one of the top surgeons in the country and is the smartest person I've ever met!  So when he has something to say, I listen.  We had a great discussion about the seeds and all the health benefits.

Chia is harvested mainly in Mexico and an Aztec super food.  It's said that Aztec warriors subsisted on chia seeds alone during conquests.

Chia-seeds

Wow!  I still cannot believe I didn't know anything about these!  Here are just a few of the benefits:

1. They are the best plant based source for Omega-3 fatty acids {more than flax seeds and 8 times more than salmon!}

2. Chia seeds are an excellent gluten-free source of fiber.  Chia fiber is soluble fiber {the best kind} that helps lower your cholesterol and is super healthy for your heart

3. They are loaded with antioxidants!

4. a really high source of protein that is very easily digestible so great for pregnant vegetarians

5. Low glycemic index.  What is that you say?  Having an index of 1 means it actually helps lower the rate at which your body converts carbohydrates into sugars! {yes, that's a really good thing}  And by doing this it can curb your cravings for sugar ie. junk food!

6. Diet food.  Chia seeds can absorb 10 times their weight in water which fills you up faster {why you should take a spoonful every morning : ) }

7.  Oprah loves them!  She was introduced to them here, by Dr. Oz Dr-oz-oprah_pumpkin-chia-seed

Unlike most things that are good for you, they taste great!  Actually, you don't taste them at all because they have a super super mild flavor.  You won't even know they are there!  And they can be eaten with the shells on, unlike flax seeds which have to be ground up to get benefits.

Seriously, if you haven't left this website to go buy yourself some chia, do it now!  No, seriously, this is where you can find some  Chia Seeds : )

Now, that you have them, how do you eat them?  Well, yes, you could eat a tablespoon full in the morning and be fabulous, but there are all sorts of ways to eat them.  I've enjoyed them sprinkled on salads, oatmeal, cereal, yoghurt, mixed in smoothies and juice and even add them to your baking.  {More ideas to come}

Lesliesarnasig

PS I didn't take any of these photos.  They were found on google images.  Though I wish I were at the taping of Oprah ; )
