Crazy for Cookie

By Leslie · Comments (4) · April 25th, 2013

Cookie Johnson & Leslie Durso Last week I had the pleasure of attending an event at Neiman Marcus with Cookie Johnson, designer of CJ by Cookie Johnson Denim.  She is debuting her new Spring/Summer line.  So why am I interested?  Cookie is not only a fascinating business woman, AIDS awareness spokesperson, but also makes sure all her denim is manufactured right here in Los Angeles.  Cool huh?

Cookie Johnson Denim When I asked Cookie what advice she had for female entrepreneurs she said, “Do your homework.  Research what has made other people in that field successful.”  I agree! You can never learn too much!

Cookie says manufacturing in Los Angeles is key because it’s the birthplace of premium denim and the best resources in the world are available here.  It also doesn’t hurt that manufacturing in Los Angeles creates jobs for Americans and reduces her shipping carbon footprint ;)  Cookies advice for Earth Month is to use reusable products.  Swap out paper towels for dish towels, eliminate paper napkins and use beautiful fabric ones.  Right on Cookie!

I asked who the CJ Denim customer is and she said, “Real women with real bodies.”  I love that!  And it’s true!  These jeans look just as good on a size 0 as on a size 18.  Among her favorite people to dress are Oprah and Angela Bassett.

So here’s my lowdown on CJ Denim.  I love them!  The fabric is so soft it feels more like wearing sweats than denim and the fit is fabulous!  They come in dark denim washes as well as a bunch of fun colors.  I’ve been rocking the green ones for Earth Month.  And I love the price point on these jeans.  My favorite style is $124 which is fabulous for a premium denim that you’ll be living in!  You can find them in at Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills or on their website.

xoxo!

You’re Never Fully Dressed…

By Leslie · Comments (4) · January 28th, 2013

…Without a smile!!  Just in time for Valentine’s Day, I ask you, why put anything but the best on your smile?  We try so hard to eat right, but have you been thinking about what you are putting on your lips and did you know it might be toxic??

A lot of lipsticks contain deadly chemicals and animal byproducts!  And let’s think about it… we’re putting lipstick on out lips… around our mouthes.  There are all sorts of terrifying stats about how much lipstick a woman consumes floating around the internet… they range from 3-10 lbs. in a lifetime… Now, I’m not a scientist so I have no idea, but I do know ingredients and if there is lead in something why on earth would you want to put it on your skin, let alone on your lips?!

The FDA claims the levels of lead in lipsticks are not harmful, but let’s face it, when is eating lead not harmful??  The problem is that the chemicals in lipstick not only get absorbed through your skin, but also when you’re eating and drinking.

The brands with the highest levels of lead in them are Christian Dior, Lancome, Clinique, YSL, Estee Lauder, Shiseido, Red Earth, and Chanel.

Check out this clip from a show I did with Bill Nye the science guy about the potential harms of lipstick:

So what should you be rockin on your pout?  I am currently obsessed with Lippy Girl Cosmetics!

They make gorgeous, organic, and vegan lipsticks that last and won’t dry out your lips!  They have fabulously cheeky names like “Mother Pucker”, and “Sassy Ass”.  You can also top them off with this “Extra Virgin Lip Gloss” it’s super smooth, smells yummy, and is not sticky at all!  Def check them out!

xoxo!

My Top 10 Eco-Beauty Products

By Leslie · Comments (1) · November 7th, 2012

I often get asked questions about how to carry “kind” living into other facets in your life.  Being eco-conscious isn’t just about what you eat, it is also about your lifestyle.  So, I thought I’d share some of my favorite beauty products with you.  Now I will preface this list by saying that I am in no way connected to any of these products, these are the products I actually use in my everyday life :)

I put my hair through a lot!  Travels, heat treatment, pulling, pinning… thank goodness for Aveda Dry Remedy Shampoo and Conditioner that leaves my hair soft and smooth.

Aveda Inner Light Mineral Tinted Moisturizer In fact, all of my concealers, powders, and blushes are Aveda.  I have really sensitive skin and I find Aveda products give the best results for daytime looks or camera ready red-carpet without giving me breakouts.

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics eye shadows Gorgeous colors with none of the animal and chemical ingredients!

Tarte Cosmetics mascara A nice rich color that make your lashes look lovely.

Aveda lip liner and lip shine The average woman eats 4-9 pounds of lipstick in her lifetime… make sure it’s at least lipstick without lead or petroleum!

Of course living in Southern California I am outside a lot and always wear my sunscreen! I love this one by Jason!

L’Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream A little pricy but so worth it when my hands get super dry from all the cooking!

I love Scotch Naturals nail polish because it’s eco-friendly and they have great colors!

Alba Botanica Nourishing Coconut Milk Shave Cream gives a close shave and smells super fabulous!

EcoTools Recycled Plastic Bath Poof the best way to lather up!

I do have to give a shout out to my favorite salon in the world for giving me my eco-licious locks! Planet Salon in Beverly Hills is just the BEST!
