Attack of the Delicious Tomatoes

By Leslie
·
August 29th, 2011

0tomatoesI cannot pick the tomatoes in my garden fast enough!  This heat wave that Southern California is having is making my tomato plants go crazy!  Not that I'm complaining ;)  I picked all of these just now and there will be so many more ready within the next couple of days.

What is your favorite thing from your garden right now?

There is nothing quite as tasty as a homegrown tomato. This year I didn’t have a garden myself, but my grandpa did and they were just as good.

I wish I had a garden with tomatoes growing like crazy! I just spent an insane amount on tomatoes at the farmers market the other day.

Those tomatoes are gorgeous! What kind do you plant? I planted a variety of cherry tomatoes, Roma and honestly I can’t remember what the third kind was… the cherry tomatoes have been delicious, but I find the larger ones a little mealy. I want to do more research for larger tomatoes for next year.

It is nice to grow your own tomatoes. My number one reason for growing them is that I eat them everyday and they are expensive! (at least the kind I like)
So the tomatoes above are orange heirloom cherry tomatoes, yellow heirloom pear tomatoes and the rogue red (plum? or campari?) tomatoes. If you remember in this post: http://www.lesliesarna.com/2011/07/whats-new-in-the-garden.html I have no idea where those red tomatoes came from, they just popped up in the garden!
I also have san marzano tomatoes, roma and black heirloom tomatoes growing.

The best best best way to find the best seeds is to simply cut open a tomato and if you like what you see and taste, bury the seeds and water frequently. Seriously that’s how I get almost all my tomato seeds. It’s that easy. That’s how I got almost all of these seeds. My sister Julie did smuggle some of them back from Italy for me ;)

You’re lucky. Here it the UK I usually get a decent amount just a few plants in the garden but this year seems to have been a bad year . I think its been colder than normal over the summer months. Glad yours are doing ok though.
