Homemade Butter

Yeah, that's right, I said Homemade Butter!  Impressed yet?  Well, don't be too impressed, it was really really easy!  And oh my goodness is it tasty!!  So rich and creamy!!

What you'll need:

heavy cream, room temperature

yup, one ingredient!

But if you would like to make salted butter, you can add a big pinch of salt.

What you'll do:

Pour cream into a airtight container with plenty of room.  I used a ziploc twist lid container.

First it will turn into whipped cream:

Then it will turn grainy, then little balls of butter will form into a larger ball and a thin liquid will pull away:

Once you've got a solid and a liquid in the container.  By the way, it takes about 20 minutes of shaking!  Strain it through cheese cloth or a metal mesh strainer:

This is a great activity to do with your kids!  They will have a blast shaking!

Enjoy!

Awesome! It looks great! There is a way you can make it without the workout if you want to lazy – you can “shake” the cream in the food processor :) Mmm homemade butter is SO much better than the storebought stuff!

Well, you’ll certainly get slim arms doing it like this!
I believe you can also put the cream in the KitchenAid with the globe and whipp until the fat and the liquid parts of the cream separate (basically, you ruin the emulsion), then you strain it, and if you have a good wooden spatula, you press so more of the liquid is removed :)

This is a fantastic idea, and something I had no idea I could do at my home, (which is NOT a farm). I will feel like Laura Ingalls Wilder! Very excited to try this one out…

Ooh I remember doing something like this back in elementary school… I’ll have to try it again! I think I might add some coarse sea salt at the end – salted butter is so delicious!

I just made the butter andit was so much fun I had to make a second batch. Now I have to make some homemade bread because it just wouldn’t be right to put this on store bought bread. That was so fun!!! Oh and it tastes so good too.
